The first thing you'll need to do is register an account with us. This is completely free!
Make sure you enter a valid e-mail address - we will use it to send a confirmation e-mail to you with an activation link. If for any reason you don't receive the confirmation e-mail please contact us and we'll try to help.
If you tick the "Send Birthday Reminder" box, we will e-mail you once a year to remind you to set up a gift list in time for your birthday. This is completely optional, but we find it helps!
Once you have activated your account via the e-mail we sent you, log in to GLC with your e-mail address and password. Once logged in you will see a User Control strip at the top of the page showing your e-mail address and various useful links:
Initially you will have no gift lists set up, so your next step is to create one! Click on the "Add another" button to add a gift list (you can have as many gift lists as you like).
Fill in as much of the form as you like - the only essential bit of information is the name of the event, the rest is optional. For instance, if the list is for a wedding you might put "Jim and Julie's wedding" in the 'Name' box, leave the 'Tag Line' blank, and put the date of the wedding in the 'Event Date' box.
If you add a password your gift list will be more secure, as visitors will need the password to see the contents of the list. You can of course leave it public by not giving it a password, in which case anyone in the world can view your list.
If you tick the 'Notification' box we will e-mail you whenever someone purchases something from your gift list. This is a useful way of keeping track of what has been bought. You can of course choose not to be notified and keep it all a complete surprise!
When you're done, press the 'Next' button.
Once the gift list has been set up you will be taken back to your account home page, showing all the gift lists you have registered so far. It'll probably look something like this:
Click on the event title to see more info and start adding items to the gift list.
You start off with no items in your list. To start adding items click the 'Add Gift' button in the 'Gift Items' area a little way down the page.
Enter the details of the gift you want to add, including as much information as you like.
In the description you can put further information about the item, or even which shop you've seen the item in if it's hard to come by. For instance, if you want a purple scarf you may not necessarily be able to buy it online, but you'll be able to recommend a shop that sells them.
Giving an estimated price for the item will probably help people decide what they want to buy, but don't feel it has to be exact - it's a guide more than anything.
If you have found the item online, feel free to put a direct link to it here. Note that GLC doesn't actually sell anything, and your visitors aren't forced into buying the item from the shop you specify. Amazon or Argos are good places to start looking, or even Google.
Note: we have a special "Bookmarklet" which will let you add a button to your toolbar which will easily allow you to add gifts that you find on any website. You can install it once you have logged in.
The Priority is an indication of how much you want this item. More stars means you want it more, fewer stars means it wouldn't be the end of the world if no one bought it for you. You can also specify that you don't want an item - useful if people generally buy you things on a particular theme and you want to say "I don't want any more of these"!
When you're done, either click the 'Add' button to add the item and return to the gift list, or the 'Add another' button to continue adding more items.
When you have your list set up and ready, click on the 'Tell a friend' link, which will give you all the information you need to give your friends and family access to your gift list.
And that's it!
You also have the option of seeing what items have been bought from the list so far. We don't show this by default because we don't want to spoil the surprise, but we do provide a link at the top the page so you can 'View Purchases'. Bear in mind that some people may prefer to buy items anonymously, so their name might not appear alongside their purchased items.
